50lbs of Slip Mix = ~5 liquid gallons
Georgies Natural White stoneware slip uses the same clay formula as our moist clay, G-Mix 6 (CC520). You can tint this slip with Mason StainsĀ® or other colorants to your preference as you mix it.
This dry mix does not include Sodium Silicate, Soda Ash or Barium Carbonate, which are crucial to making the slip work. For additional adjustments, use Darvan
About slip additives:
These components are the thinning and suspension agents that hold the clay particles in the liquid base, so they don’t all sink to the bottom. When mixing your slip, over-thinning (aka overdeflocculation) is a major concern. If you use too much of these ingredients, your greenware may be grainy, fragile, and difficult to handle or work with. Over-thinning errors often can’t be corrected — meaning your entire batch of slip, and the money you spent on the raw materials, all goes to waste.
Use SODIUM SILICATE sparingly: do not add it all at once! Add it only as needed for your slip to perform. If you reach the maximum amount of sodium silicate for your batch size and the slip still does not flow at the desired rate, you can add DARVAN 7 at 35 grams (1.24 liquid ounces) per 100 dry pounds or 105 grams (3.7 liquid ounces) per 300 pounds of slip mix.
Remember: you can always add more, but you can’t take it back out!
